Wayne Ramey, a dedicated and steadfast man known for his long and impactful career in the logging and coal mining industries, passed away on Wednesday April 22, 2026, at Mary Breckinridge-ARH Hospital in Hyden, Kentucky. He was 85 years old. Born on February 10, 1941, in Dryden, Virginia, Wayne lived a life marked by hard work, commitment, and devotion to both his family and his country.
His professional journey was distinguished and varied. Wayne served with honor in the U.S. Army from March 27, 1961, to March 26, 1965, embodying the values of duty and sacrifice that he carried with him throughout his life. After his military service, he pursued a long career in the logging and coal mining sectors, where he made significant contributions. As a foreman, he oversaw numerous reclamation projects for Starfire Coal, demonstrating leadership and a deep respect for the land. Beyond mining, Wayne also invested his skills and determination in the trucking industry as an owner and operator, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.
Wayne was a man of many talents and interests. A hard worker at heart, he took great pride in working around his home and cultivating a large garden, which reflected his love for nature and self-sufficiency. His greatest joy came from his family, to whom he was deeply devoted. He was also a proud Veteran who respected and honored his service and fellow servicemen.
Wayne’s loss is deeply felt by his surviving family and friends. He is survived by his children Larry (Rita) Jeffers, Debbie Wisdom, Tammy (Michael) Feltner, Cecil Ramey, John Ramey, and Shellean (Paul) Green. His legacy continues through eight grandchildren, Tyler Ramey, Nick Feltner, Ethan Feltner, Joey (Gwen) Jeffers, Owen Green, Lauren Green, Karley Morgan and Courtney Morgan and two great-grandchildren, Carter Ramey and Caden Ramey, as well as many other relatives and dear friends who cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Kittye Cooper and Cecil Ramey; Grandparents, Barbara and James Ramey, his wife, Shirley Ramey; his son, Jerry A. Ramey; and his grandson, Murrell Michael Wisdom.
Wayne Ramey’s life stands as a testament to resilience, dedication, and love. His contributions to his industries, his country, and his family will not be forgotten. In remembering Wayne, we honor a man who worked tirelessly, cared deeply, and lived honorably.
