Larry Mitchell was born on February 2, 1959 and walked through Heaven's gate on October 6, 2025 at his home in Speedwell, TN with his loving wife of 48 years by his side and holding his hand. He was a loving husband to Mavie, the love of his life. His nickname for her was Pooh Bear.
Larry was known for his friendly and outgoing nature, embodying the spirit of a man who never met a stranger. He had a genuine love for life, which shone through in all his endeavors.
He dedicated 33 years of his life to a career as a coal miner, where his commitment to hard work and resilience earned him the respect of his peers. He found joy in the strength of community and the bonds forged during his years of labor. Beyond his professional life, Larry showed a profound appreciation for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, finding peace in nature's embrace. His hobbies included woodworking, building black powder rifles, making fishing bait, and crafting his own ammunition; showcasing his resourcefulness and creativity.
Larry’s proudest accomplishments were the roles he held as a husband, father, uncle, and friend. He built an enduring legacy of love and kindness, treasured by all who knew him.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Mavie Coots Mitchell; two brothers, Lonis Mitchell (Marie) and Jeff Mitchell; two sisters, Kathy Shepherd and Dallie Maggard (Carl); and a host of beloved nieces and nephews who will carry forward his memory and teachings. He also leaves two special friends: Danny Henson from Georgia and Alan Caudill from Tennessee.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Lester Mitchell and Rose Wells; his daughter, Alisha Michelle Mitchell; and his siblings: Pauline Cress, Ann Mitchell, Betty Miniard, Everett Mitchell, David, and George Mitchell.
Visitation for Larry Mitchell will be held on October 10, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a funeral service taking place the following day, October 11, 2025, at 12:00 noon. Both services will be conducted at Walker Funeral Home in Hyden, Kentucky.
As we remember Larry, let us celebrate his life filled with laughter, compassion, and the countless memories he created with all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit will remain undimmed, continuing to touch the lives of his family and friends.
