Gillis Burns, a retired coal miner and dedicated former employee of the City of Dayton, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at his residence in Sizerock, Kentucky. Born on March 4, 1947, in Sizerock, he lived a life marked by steadfast commitment to his family, community, and the simpler joys of outdoor life.

Gillis embarked on a lifelong career in coal mining, contributing to the hard-working fabric of Kentucky’s mining community, bringing his strong work ethic and outgoing nature to his role with distinction. His passion for spending time outdoors was well known, especially his love for riding his side-by-side with family, hunting, and visiting flea markets—activities that brought him great joy and allowed him to forge deep bonds with those he cared about most.

A family-oriented man, Gillis took immense pride in his roles as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather—accomplishments he held as the crowning achievements of his life. His legacy lives on through his sons: Gillis Burns Jr. (Tiffany), Eric Bowling (Pam), and Anthony Wayne Bowling; his brothers Arnold Burns and Leon Burns; and sisters Jean Stutler, Mollie Bowling, and Beulah Lee. He is also lovingly remembered by his six grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, who carry forward his spirit and values.

Gillis was preceded in death by his beloved parents: Bige and Hattie Burns, his loving and devoted wife: Geraldine Burns, brother: Willard Burns, and sister: Belinda Gibson. Their memories remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
