Delsie Adams was born on February 14,1928 on Wolf Creek in Cinda, KY to Gordon and Florence Lewis Maggard. She was the oldest of eight children. Her father died when she was young but, despite hardships, her mother provided a delightful childhood for them. Delsie shared many amusing tales of her youth.
Delsie attended Stinnett Settlement School and completed teaching certifications at Berea College and Eastern Kentucky University. For more than a dozen years, she taught the children of Leslie County in various one room schoolhouses around the county. As a teacher, Delsie was responsible for much more than the curriculum. For example, she walked miles in the dark through the woods to arrive at the schoolhouse to build a fire in the stove before the students arrived.
Like her mother, Delsie became a young widow and raised her five children by herself. Plus, she helped raise a granddaughter. Delsie enjoyed her children, her home, and her relationships with family and friends. She was an immaculate housekeeper and the family historian recounting names, dates, and details with perfect accuracy even at age 97. Delsie loved talking with friends and family and spent hours on the telephone and writing letters.
Blessed with good health and an astounding mind, Delsie enjoyed a lifetime of devoted care by her beloved daughter, Tammy. Together, they enjoyed gardening, flowers, puzzles, and game shows. A host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren was also a source of joy. Delsie always had a warm smile and friendly “hello” for everyone.
Over the years, Delsie mourned the loss of her mother and father, her husband, Theo Adams, and the following siblings- brothers Oley, Coye, Lonzo, and James and her sister, Elsie. Now, she is mourned by her children-Eddie Joe Adams (Faye), Margie Carolyn Napier (Greg), Keith Adams (Karen), Melissa Caldwell (Terry), and Tammy Adams along with her grandchildren- Daniel Adams, Patricia Adams, Shannon Reinhart (Keith), Sean Adams, Keisha Caldwell Feltner (Matt), Tammy Mattox (Gary), Kim Mann(Tom), Misty Weber (Greg), and their children, her surviving sisters-Elva Bentley and Betty Day (David), and an extensive community of friends.
Delsie concluded her life on June 21, 2025 surrounded in love with her daughters by her side. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Greg & Noreen Wells Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Hazard, KY for the excellent care provided during Delsie’s final days.
