Benny Lewis, born on August 10, 1941, in Yeaddiss, Kentucky, passed away on August 21, 2025, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, TN. He leaves behind a legacy marked by his unwavering work ethic and profound love for his family and community.
Benny was known for his commitment to his career as the owner of a trucking company and as a logger. His dedication to his work earned him the respect of many, and he played an essential role in the lives of those he employed and worked alongside.
Beyond the realm of hard work, Benny was a man of many passions. He had a genuine love for the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman, relishing in the beauty and serenity of nature. His adventurous spirit extended into the world of poker, where he demonstrated remarkable skill. Over the years, Benny carved out a successful career in cards, winning several national poker tournaments and consistently finishing in the money in numerous others.
Known for his great sense of humor, Benny was a true people person who could light up a room with his laughter and warmth. His personality endeared him to many, as he created a welcoming atmosphere wherever he went.
Benny was affiliated with the Cutshin Bible Church in Yeaddiss, KY, a testament to his community spirit and values. He was a generous person, always willing to provide for those less fortunate and in need, reflecting his compassionate heart.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ophia Carolyn Day Lewis; sons, Brasley Lewis and Brady Lewis; daughters, Imogene Lewis Vanzant & Andy, Megan Lewis & Sam; and sister, Beatrice Bonner. Benny was also a proud grandfather to: Maryetta, Ricky, James, Jamie, Brandy, Crystal, Sophia, Christina, and Olivia; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Alex, Katie, Zeb, Hannah, Tyler, Haley, Rose, and Cynthia; who were among his greatest joys. Benny's special nieces: Linda, Mary Elizabeth, and Larnie. He leaves behind a special dog, Dozer. Benny also had many cherished friends including: Clyde Wells (Donna), Michael Malicott (Charles), Peter Olivio (Angela), Joey Olivio (Rhonda), Terry Jacobs, Scottie Smiles, Cecil Goins (Mary), Roger Wells (Carolyn), and Daniel Dodson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Noah Lewis; mother, Etta Mullins; grandchildren: Brasley Lee Lewis, Oliver Benjamin Vanzant, and Jeannie Vanzant; brothers: Cecil Lewis, Ted Lewis, Henderson Lewis, Willie Lewis, and Jimmy Lewis; and sisters: Larnie Hansel, Rebecca Madden, and Helen Partin.
As we remember Benny Lewis, we honor a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His legacy of love, generosity, and respect for others will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
